Negative taken for June 20, 1965, Arkansas Gazette article "Fort Smith: An Echo of the Frontier," E5:2. The National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas, contains the graves of some of the most famous figures in Arkansas history. On a visit to the cemetery, Ernie Deane took photographs of a number of tombstones, including James M. McIntosh. McIntosh, a general in the Confederate Army, was killed at the Battle of Pea Ridge on March 7, 1862.
